NEW Gas Loading Request Procedure

HPCAT Users may request our assistance with scheduling use of the GSECARS gas loading facility (https://gsecars.uchicago.edu/gsecars-facility/additional-facilities/gsecars-compres-gas-loading-system/

To initiate this request, check the box for Gas Loading System on the Equipment tab on your ESAF and notify Rich Ferry ferry@anl.gov and Curtis Kenney-Benson curtkb@anl.gov by email at least 2 weeks in advance so they can schedule use of GSECARS’ system. HPCAT does not own this system, and can not predict when it may already be in use by others or is out of service due to maintenance/repair issues. Because of this, we recommend users to bring loaded cells, whenever possible.

Provide details – DAC type, # of DACs, gas requested, Load Pressure, ESAF#, date needed – and ship your DACs with enough time to ensure they arrive in advance. Please note in your email any DACs that will be used in resistive heating or low temperature experiments. For pressure determination, the ruby must be visible from the piston side of the DAC – especially critical if the starting pressure is less than 1 GPa.

Beginning January 2023, neon gas loading will be done on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays only. Helium and other gasses will be available on Mondays and Fridays.

Gas loading will be performed during normal business hours for HPCAT users with samples intended to be studied at HPCAT facilities only. For others, please contact Young Jay Ryu ryu@cars.uchicago.edu at GSECARS directly.

Please remember to use the following acknowledgement if you use the GSECARS / COMPRES gas loading system:
Use of the COMPRES-GSECARS gas loading system was supported by COMPRES under NSF Cooperative Agreement EAR -1606856 and by GSECARS through NSF grant EAR-1634415 and DOE grant DE-FG02-94ER14466. This research used resources of the Advanced Photon Source, a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science User Facility operated for the DOE Office of Science by Argonne National Laboratory under Contract No. DE-AC02-06CH11357.
