A visionary scientist and pioneer in high-pressure physics, Mikhail Eremets passed away on Nov. 16, 2024. Dr. Eremets began his scientific journey in Russia earning his doctorate from the prestigious Moscow Engineering Physics Institute. His remarkable scientific career spanned several countries – France, Japan, the Netherlands, the UK and United States. He finally settled in the Max Planck Institute in Mainz (Germany) in 2001 where he made the famous discoveries of record-breaking superconductivity in sulfur and Lanthanum hydrides. His work on sodium, hydrogen and nitrogen at multi megabar pressures has been paradigm shifting and has advanced our understanding of warm, dense condensed matter. Mikhail was awarded the prestigious Bridgman Award by the AIRAPT in 2017 and the James C. McGroddy Prize for New Materials by the American Physical Society in 2020. We mourn the loss of this renowned and exceptional high-pressure researcher.
