Please note the call for a new award in high pressure research, the Neil Ashcroft Early Career Award for Studies of Matter at Extreme High Pressure Conditions.

This is a great opportunity to promote high pressure research and highlight early career researchers.  

Award is established under the American Physical Society (APS) Topical Group on Shock Compression of Condensed Matter (GSCCM), however the award nomination covers a broad range of high pressure research and techniques - full description is below.

It is with great pleasure that we announce a new APS GSCCM-administered award for researchers in their first 10 years post-PhD, the “Neil Ashcroft Early Career Award for Studies of Matter at Extreme High Pressure Conditions.” This new award will be offered annually, beginning immediately, to recognizes outstanding theoretical or experimental contributions by an early-career (within 10-years of PhD) scientist to studies of matter at extreme high pressure conditions. This includes static and/or dynamic compressions within the disciplines of Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Earth and Planetary Science, Soft Matter and Biology. The honor is conferred annually and includes of a $5000 stipend, a certificate citing the contributions of the recipient, and an allowance for travel to an APS meeting to receive the award to deliver an invited lecture at either the biennial SCCM Conference or the APS March Meeting.

Please help us distribute this announcement widely, as this award is meant to canvass a broader high-pressure community including theory and computation, static and dynamic compression within the disciplines of Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Earth and Planetary Science, Soft Matter and Biology.

We sincerely thank Judith Ashcroft and her family for the endowment donation which makes it possible to give this award at $5,000, demonstrating a sincere commitment to supporting early career scientists. And, we thank the award creation committee for their hard work and persistence in crafting this award to spur growth and reward outstanding early-career research in the high-pressure community. The committee consisted of DCOMP Vice Chair Eva Zurek, AIRAPT Treasurer Shanti Deemyad, GSCCM Past Chair Ivan Oleynik, and GSCCM Secretary/Treasurer Matt Lane.
